Answers:

1. How long am I going to learn Polish to communicate in a common everyday situation, for instance, on the street, in a shop, or on the phone?
Our basic course, called Survival Polish, guarantees the ability to communicate in the following circumstances:
  • arranging meetings, rescheduling and canceling them
  • phone conversation
  • self-introduction, talking about oneself and asking the interlocutor for the same
Such a course is composed of 30 lesson units and can be carried out in one weekend or conducted in a period of one or two months.

2. What factors influence the success in learning a foreign language and what should I do to learn Polish?
There are three main factors:
  • motivation
  • capabilities
  • professionalism
MERITUM guarantees tuition in a comfort atmosphere, with the application of fully professional method and linguistic materials. Teaching Polish as a Foreign Language is our exclusive speciality. This fact lets us concentrate on mastering the methodology and developing our own, unique teaching and learning aids, which are already very popular among our students.

3. During the week I have time for nothing except my job. Are there any courses on Saturday or Sunday?
Yes, there are. Lessons take place on all seven days of the week, incuding weekends. On Saturdays and Sundays they start at 7:30 a.m. and end at 9.30 p.m. You could even, for example, work in Gdansk or in Poznan and come to Warsaw at weekends for the intensive course, two times six hours of learning a day. The time necessary to get to Warsaw from some major Polish cities is as follows:
  • from Gdansk - 5 hours
  • from Poznan - 3 hours
  • from Cracow - 2 hours 30 minutes
  • from Bydgoszcz - 3 hours
  • from Kielce - 2 hours
  • from Torun - 3 hours
In summer, apart from intensive summer courses, we also conduct regular courses, like during any other time of the year.

4. I have decided to take part in one of your courses. What formalities shoul I fulfil to be able to start learning?
You should get acquainted with the rules of the School, send us the application form and make payment.

5. I want to enroll to a course. When is the next Survival Polish course starting?
Survival Polish courses for individual students start on any chosen date at least 5 days after the date the course was agreed on. Starting dates of group courses depend on their intensity, proficiency level and their total time span.

6. I have no time for learning at home. Will I also have to spare some time for doing homeworks, if I participate in a course in MERITUM?
Curricula in MERITUM are designed so that the student works intensively during the lesson. Certainly, each teacher usually assigns the students a homework, but this is merely supposed to be an extension for the knowledge the student receive in the class, hence the homework is not necessary to actively participate in the next lesson.

7. I heard Polish is extremely difficult to learn. Is it true?
Indeed, Polish is one of the most difficult languages in the world. It is therefore crucial that it is taught in a logical and systematic manner, and not by occasional, unqualified people. Only a professional tuition can guarantee progress in learning. Teaching curricula in MERITUM, the result of 8 years of constant development, are organised in such a manner that the grammatical material is limited to minimum whenever possible. During our courses we emphasise the practical ability to cummunicate in the Polish language, and the grammar is only supposed to help reach that goal. Grammar as such is not our main concern.

8. Could I fulfil all the formalities from abroad and come to Poland directly for the course?
Yes, certainly. All formalities necessary to become a student of MERITUM are reduced to minimum, and are meant to be the beginning of pleasant contacts between the student and our School.

9. Does Meritum teach Polish only in Poland, in Warsaw?
Since the very beginning in 1992, MERITUM conducts courses in nearly entire Poland, not only in Warsaw.

10. Does MERITUM only teach Polish?
MERITUM is the Polish Language School and it solely teaches that language. The whole methodical and administrative effort is therefore directed towards assuring the highest attention to the students' needs. We are proud to concentrate solely on developing more and more effective methods of teaching Polish as a foreign language. Thanks to that, our longstanding standards guarantee our professionality and success in achieveing the ultimate goal of the students: acquiring the skills necessary to communicate in Polish.

11. Why do you claim that MERITUM is a better choice than any other existing school of that kind?
MERITUM has its own curricula and its own teaching aids. The staff of MERITUM work on the quality of the teaching material and constantly upgrade them, add new, up-to-date items. In response to our customers' needs we keep creating a variety of alternative, custom-made, specialised curricula. The School also conducts specialised training for its teaching staff, focusing on effective ways to teach Polish to foreign students. Due to the fact that Polish is one of the most difficult languages in the world and due to the extreme compexity of its grammar, the methodology of teaching Polish requires special skills - teaching Polish as a foreign language is totally different from teaching, say, English. Our staff are alumni of departments of Polish philology of Polish universities and are all monitored and helped by an expert methodologist. Our services are appreciated by a huge number of foreign companies, whose listing can be found here.

12. I would like to come to Poland to take part in a Polish language course at MERITUM, but I am also interested in finding accomodation in a Polish home, with a Polish family. Can MERITUM help me arrange that?
Yes, we can. We give students of our intensive courses a possibility to stay with a Polish family for the priod of the course. The chosen famili is usually a two-generation one, in standard living conditions (including a single room for the student, common breakfasts and suppers, access to all facilities such as TV, radio, or kitchen equipment). We have a number of families that have co-operated with us for years and help aour students to get in contact with the Polish reality. They also prove helpful in the process of teaching by developing conversational skills in Polish. The families are carefully selected and the students who had their homestays with them confirmed our choices with their positive opinions. The homestay option has so far been chosen by the staff of the British Embassy and Philips Poland.

13. I need to learn Polish quickly and intensively, but I do not have such a possibility while I am working in Warsaw. Does MERITUM organise courses outside Warsaw?
Apart from stationary courses we also organise holiday courses in other parts of Poland. We have cooperation with tourist resorts in a number of picturesque locations: in the mountain region, in Rabka Zdroj and Szczawnica, and in the Masurian Lake District in Sorkwity. The students not only profit from intensive language training, but can also relax from work while enjoying the unique landscapes and culture of the Polish coutryside. The active form of language training merged with attractive trips gives excellent results in acquiring new language skills. Two teachers take care of the learning progress and the surrounding guarantees the necessary comfort. Apart from pelasant memories there is a lasting effect: the ability to communicate in Polish.
